Prospective Students

PROCEDURE

GENERAL REMARKS

The main purpose of the ISGP is to enable qualified graduate students to pursue advanced interdisciplinary research exceeding the provisions of existing departmental programs. It facilitates neither the avoidance of academic requirements nor the pursuit of a particular definition of interdisciplinarity.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the ISGP’s academic requirements, which are in addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ requirements. All applicants must present two official university transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended, indicating an A average in their most recent degree study. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the institutions directly to request the transcripts – the Program will not accept transcripts forwarded from another UBC department or program. Relevant academic and professional qualifications noted on the curriculum vita will also be taken into account.

DEADLINES

Applications are due by January 15th, for admission in September. Applicants are evaluated by the Faculty Advisory Committee, and notified in March/April. If admitted, students may postpone starting for up to one year. Students are also required to reside in Vancouver for the first year of their degree.

GENERAL PROCEDURE

  • Consult with the ISGP Chair about your prospective research topic; develop and write a Statement of Proposed Research Topic (2 pages).
  • Submit a one-page cover letter that motivates the choice of the ISGP as opposed to other programs at UBC and elsewhere. Also make a case for the specific resources at UBC that will facilitate your studies.
  • Identify two Co-supervisors and obtain their approval. See the Co-supervisor Request Form.
  • Establish a Home Department—a department in which one of your Co-supervisors has their appointment—by notifying the Head of that department and requesting their signature of approval. See the Home Department Request Form.
  • Ensure the required application documentation is submitted to the ISGP office (reference letters, transcripts, curriculum vita, cover letter, Statement of Proposed Research Topic, Home Department and Co-supervisor Request Forms, and Application Form) is submitted to the ISGP office.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application information can be found on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website. Please note that applicants must apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies concurrently with their application to ISGP. You can apply online here.

Interdisciplinarity

Where the mind without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls
